Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka celebrates scoring at Wolves Though Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were seen as tough opponents with top-four ambitions, the Gunners were in a confident mood having recorded three wins on the bounce in all competitions. Saka ensured the streak continued with his beautiful volley from a Kieran Tierney pass two minutes prior to the half-time break. Alexandre Lacazette then sealed the win his strike off the bench in the 86th minute to keep Arsenal’s slim top-four hopes alive. It caps off an exciting week for Saka who signed a contract extension at the Emirates Stadium until 2024. “To a certain extent today wasn’t what we usually associate with Arsenal, they were dogged, really good defensively and they’ve got that little bit of quality as well when Lacazette comes on,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports as per the Express. “I’m so pleased for that young man, Saka. He’s a joy to watch. He’s loving the Premier League. New contract. As he said, what a week for him. It’s a really good finish. “Aubameyang is heavily involved, he knows exactly where he is on the pitch, plays it out wide and you just see again at the back post, Saka drops his shoulder [to get into space]. “He has a swing at it, it’s not necessarily conventionally the best volley you’ll ever see but it’s a really good one, and it works for him.center_img “He guides it away from the keeper, it’s a nice strike. It’s just one of those but it’s good technique.” Former Arsenal defender Ashley Cole, also speaking on Sky Sports, said Saka feels very much at home now that he’s tied to the club for the foreseeable future. “Watching the interview, you know he [Saka] feels that Arsenal is his home,” Cole stated. “He’s a young kid. The group they’ve got around him, with extra young players, is making him feel very welcome and at home. “I think Arsenal fans are buzzing that he’s signed and he definitely looks one for the future, for sure.” Saka, who was clearly thrilled by the goal, asserted on the need to be humble as he keeps learning. The 18-year-old now has four goals and 10 assists in 35 competitive outings. “It has been such a great week, signing my contract and then getting my first Premier League goal. And it wasn’t a bad goal either so I’m very happy,” he told the BBC. read also:Saka’s first Premier League goal keeps Arsenal in Euro race “I have to stay humble and keep my feet on the ground to keep learning. It’s important for us to have experience and world-class players around to advise us. It was tough for us today but we gave our all and that is what got us over the line.” Saka will be hoping to impress again when Arsenal host Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night. Whicker: Clippers frustrating Portland‘s top shooters

first_imgNot much has been different in this first-round playoff series. Lillard missed 16 of 22 shots in Portland’s 102-81 Game 2 loss at Staples Center on Tuesday. He missed all six three-pointers. In Game 1, the Clippers held him to 7-of-17 shooting and considered themselves ahead of the game.“I thought they (Portland) rushed some shots tonight,” said Doc Rivers, dismissively. “I thought we were really good defensively in Game 1. I didn’t think we were very good tonight.’C.J. McCollum, the shot engineer from Lehigh who went 3 of 11 on Sunday, was 6 for 17 in Game 2. That means Portland’s top guns are shooting 32.8 for the series, which moves to Portland on Saturday and Monday.“The important thing is just go at them when we have the ball,” said Austin Rivers, who was part of the Clippers’ second wave that washed out Portland’s hopes in the fourth quarter.“Those guys have to carry a heavy load for that team. We’re being real aggressive on both ends. I’m not saying they can’t defend, but the last thing they want to do is chase somebody around on defense after they’ve been on the offensive end. That’s tough, man. We’ve been going at them downhill with the ball, and then on defense we’re just trapping them, getting the ball out of their hands, and trying to make somebody else beat us.” JJ Redick referred to it as a “soft blitz,” in which Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan come out to greet Lillard as soon as he gets the ball. The Trail Blazers haven’t found a way to counter, primarily because they don’t have consistent punch in their frontcourt.Still, the Clippers took their sweet time putting away Portland. A lot of it was the foul line. This was a night when Portland coach Terry Stotts could have employed Hack-A-Clipper, because the team went 14 for 25 while DeAndre Jordan was going 1 for 6.But the Clippers also missed enough no-footers and lost enough loose balls to allow Portland to hang close at the end of the second and third quarters. Blake Griffin had only four goals in his 31 minutes, and Jordan, even though he had 18 boards, was 1 for 4.So the story, again, was a Clippers bench that is becoming its own contiguous unit. And its shape can shift. In this game, Pablo Prigioni was merely a victory cigar and Paul Pierce didn’t play at all. The subs who found a way were Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford, Wesley Johnson, Cole Aldrich and Jeff Green, and they shot 17 for 35. The L.A. bench buried Portland’s, 43-10.“Jamal’s pretty good,” said Gerald Henderson of Portland, wryly realizing he wasn’t breaking any new ground there. “He can come off screens, gets in there, get his own shot. Austin can be tough, too. We need to get into them better, play them more aggressively, make them shoot some contested ‘twos.’”Paul and Griffin re-entered the game with 7:38 left but postponed it because the Clippers bench was flying so high. The second unit began the fourth quarter intact, and the Clippers led by six. When they left, the lead was 15. The same thing happened in the second quarter, when the alt-Clippers took a 5-point lead and pushed it to 10.“As a group, we look at what the lead is,” Austin Rivers confirmed.“It’s a lot easier picking my spots now,” Crawford said. “I encourage those guys to be aggressive, because the more they do that, the more the floor opens up.”Lillard sounded the refrain of all good shooters who have bad nights.“My very first shot of the game, I got a clean pull-up,” he said, “at the free-throw line. It came out. Then I got a backdoor and got right to the rim and the ball slipped out of my hand. “There aren’t any excuses. Our coaching staff did a great job putting C.J. and I in positions where they couldn’t take a lot away from us. I just have to make the shots. As far as anything being missing, there is nothing missing. The ball just didn’t go in.”The Clippers fully expect Baby Dame to be cleaned up and ready for Game 3. But they don’t intend to Pamper him. You work your way out of Oakland and through Weber State and into Portland and finally into the world of the national commercial pitchman. And they put you in a stroller and get Kevin Garnett to tell the world you need a little fumigation. That’s not the worst thing about being Damian Lillard in this playoff series. The Clippers are.The guy who ranked No. 6 among NBA scorers might have had a premonition that he wouldn’t get to frolic against the Clippers, who aren’t exactly considered the Seven Blocks of Granite defensively. In four games against the Clippers this season, Lillard shot 32.4 percent and averaged 16 points, more than nine below his average.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Leaf Vein Patterns Are Not in Vain

first_imgThe vein patterns in a leaf approach perfection.  If the requirement is to reach every cell with the shortest and most efficient paths, leaves do it just right.  A team of scientists at Cornell, “inspired by plant leaves,” tried to build a network in a polymer substrate that would maximize distribution of fluid with evaporation-driven flow.  Their “biomimetic leaf” couldn’t improve on the real thing.  Read all about it in PNAS.1    Next, they think the “design principles” they uncovered will be useful for inventors.  “These scaling relations for evaporatively driven flow through simple networks reveal basic design principles for the engineering of evaporationpermeation-driven devices, and highlight the role of physical constraints on the biological design of leaves.”1.  Noblin et al, “Optimal vein density in artificial and real leaves,” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, published online before print July 1, 2008, doi: 10.1073/pnas.0709194105.Don’t you creationists try to latch onto this story now.  They said, “The long evolution of vascular plants has resulted in a tremendous variety of natural networks responsible for the evaporatively driven transport of water.”  So clearly they believe in evolution.  This is merely an adaptation.  Natural selection is up to the task.  That’s what natural selection does: adapts things to their environment.  It searches through all possibilities and finds the optimum solutions to nature’s engineering problems.  It tinkers with things until it gets them right.  Evolution has millions of years to work its magic.  Given enough time, anything is possible, even things that look like miracles.  Evolution is smart.  Evolution is like… well, a god.  Believe!(Visited 16 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more
