Dodgers in no rush to promote shortstop prospect Corey Seager

first_imgSAN DIEGO >> The Dodgers are in no rush to promote shortstop Corey Seager from Triple-A despite Jimmy Rollins’ recurring struggles at the plate.“We want to do everything we can to put Corey in position to be as good a Major League player as he can be,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Saturday.Seager’s initial six weeks in Oklahoma City have been a mix of good and bad.The 21-year-old had a .189 batting average and .268 on-base percentage in his first 10 games. In Seager’s next 15 games, those numbers rose to .400 and .426. In 12 games since, those numbers fell to .239 and .333. From there, League said he will pitch in “one or two more (games) after that, I think in Oklahoma.”The veteran right-hander said he agreed to a 20-day rehab assignment with the intent of taking 17 days from the time of his first game. Since his first rehab game was June 7, that means League will return to the Dodgers on June 24. League said his fastball touched 93 mph on the radar gun in his most recent inning Friday, averaging 91. He’s throwing all of his pitches without pain. He also threw more than 20 pitches in the inning, the most he’s thrown since the assignment began. “That was a good test,” he said. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly noted that League didn’t have a full spring training and is essentially trying to get one in now. “Eventually we’d likely Brandon to be (able to pitch) multiple innings,” Mattingly said.AlsoFriedman said that the exact diagnosis of Triple-A pitcher Zach Lee remains a mystery. Lee has been meeting with specialists since he reported a tingling sensation in his fingers. He hasn’t pitched since May 24. … Imani Abdullah, the San Diego high school pitcher whom the Dodgers chose in the 11th round of the amateur draft Tuesday, visited the club at Petco Park. … Scott Van Slyke (back) doubled in his first plate appearance of his first rehab game with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. … Joel Peralta pitched threw 25 pitches in the game and faced four batters. He allowed a double, single and retired the next two hitters on fly balls. … Paco Rodriguez (elbow) is expected to join Rancho Cucamonga Monday; Brandon Beachy (elbow) will make it a quartet on Tuesday. … Pedro Baez (pectoral) isn’t expected to begin a rehab assignment for another six or seven days.center_img Seager will need to find a steady groove before he’s called up.Rollins, meanwhile, saw his batting average dip below .200 for the first time since May 23. He entered the weekend with only seven hits in 12 June games. As a fielder, the Dodgers have no complaints about Rollins. Many advanced metrics place Rollins in the middle of the pack among major-league shortstops defensively, a significant upgrade over the last two seasons from Hanley Ramirez.“I think Jimmy’s going to hit for us too,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “Average-wise, I think he’s going to end up better. Nothing really is bothering me about Jimmy. I’d love him to be hitting .330 but I’d like everybody to be doing that.”League has target datelast_img read more
