New MacBook Pro Expected to Ditch MagSafe and Old USB Ports

first_imgApple isn’t afraid to ditch time-tested technology in the name of progress. They just did it when they launched the iPhone 7 without a headphone jack, and they might do it again with the new MacBook Pro models. You’ll find a number of different ports on Apple’s current machines. There’s a headphone jack, USB port, dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, and the MagSafe port for charging on the left side. On the right, there’s another USB port and an HDMI output. Now, it’s been a long, long time since Apple refreshed the MacBook Pro. According to Japanese site Macotakara, an update is finally on the way and it’s going to dramatically change the Pro’s port layout. Yes, the headphone jack is gone. They’re also reportedly ditching everything except USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3.If that happens, outputting to an external display will require either a USB-C to HDMI adapter or a monitor that sports a Thunderbolt input. Apple will happily sell you both those things, of course, and there are plenty of other companies that will, too.The change also means that you’ll be charging the new MacBook Pro via a USB type-C cable. They made the same change when they introduced the refreshed MacBook last year. While that does mean that you won’t need a USB hub to plug in a peripheral while you charge like a MacBook owner, you probably will need USB to USB-C adapters to hook up your existing accessories. Fortunately those are fairly cheap. You can pick up a two pack for nine or ten bucks on Amazon.last_img read more
