We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?IS IT TRUE one of our supporters sent us the following “IS IT TRUE” in order to generate a discussion between the CCO readers? …that the United States Senate has passed a bill that will increase the PPP loans available for small businesses to keep their staff on a paycheck and off of unemployment?…there is one situation that is not conducive to keeping people on a payroll and that is the odd fact that due to a strange thing in the original stimulus package, it pays more to be on unemployment than it does to keep a job?…people who are furloughed or laid off are eligible to get an extra $600 per week on top of the roughly $400 per week that unemployment pays?…that is correct folks, if your job paid $40,000 and your unemployment would normally be $400 per week, now it will be $1,000?…this is a deterrent to returning to work until the $600 premium ends on July 31, 2020?…something like this can only happen in America because Senators running for re-election can obstruct the bill under consideration to play Santa Claus by using other people’s money to try and buy votes?IS IT TRUE that our medical and first responders heroes who are laboring on the front line of health care crisis risking their lives every day to save yours and do not get a dime of extra money? …that it’s time for this type of treatment stop and the powers that be give our medical and first responders heroes the appropriate financial compensation for a job well done?IS IT TRUE that Vanderburgh County and Warrick County are both closing in on 100 confirmed infections of COVID19 and growing more each coming day?…while these numbers are not on par with New York City that leads the country in infections and deaths, these numbers are nothing to dismiss?…it is amazing in hindsight that there were some people here in Evansville were telling people that COVID19 would not be coming to River City?IS IT TRUE that pandemics have a way of separating thinkers from emotional people and convincing oneself that a pandemic will not come to any place is from the gut and not the mind?…the City-County Observer encourages the people of Evansville and their leaders to listen to science before prematurely open things up?…some things will be ready to open soon but this is going to be incremental and measured?…we hope all of our readers think and stay the course?IS IT TRUE for several weeks Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has been sending the message to the masses to wash your hands and don’t panic? …many people are very disappointed that the Mayor didn’t use his political influences to find a way to begin a mass testing campaign in Evansville before he begins to look for creative ways to re-open area businesses?IS IT TRUE that many people feel that the most feasible thing the Mayor to do was to used his political connections to organize a mass COVID-19 testing campaign?  …to the chagrin of his many supporters, he opted to appoint a “REOPEN EVANSVILLE TASK FORCE” to look for ways to reopen local businesses before he did mass testing for the COVID-19 virus in our community?  …in fact, many of his supporters feel if he opens local businesses prematurely and the COVID-19 virus has an unexpected resurgent and people die in the process it will be the end of his political career?IS IT TRUE that Banks raked in $10 billion in fees for handing out US-backed loans to shore up small businesses battered by the coronavirus despite taking on little to no risk on the deals?IS IT TRUE the Feds paid banks for serving as intermediaries for the $349 billion Paycheck Protection Program, which allowed any federally insured bank or credit union to field applications for rescue loans and pass them on to the US Small Business Administration for approval?IS IT TRUE that only 1.3% of the U. S. population has been tested for the COVID -19 virus so far?  …the population of the United States is around 328 million people?IS IT TRUE as of yesterday that Detroit Michigan is offering COVID -19 to all essential workers?  …this is the way to run a railroad?IS IT TRUE that Small Businesses represent one half of the workforce in the United States?IS IT TRUE that 75 companies that received government stimulus money had a market value of over $100 million dollars each?IS IT TRUE recently a CCO poster made the following comment and also asked us the following question?…here’s what “Another Voice” posted: “that talking of loans to businesses that really don’t deserve it, I have heard that many newspapers have received Government stimulus loans. They don’t deserve it!!  Did the CCO get part of these stimulus loans?  …here’s our response to “Another Voice” question?  …we posted that “The City-County Observer is in excellent financial shape.  The CCO hasn’t and will not apply for a Government stimulus loan. We want this money to be allocated to a deserving home owned and homegrown small businesses.  We are extremely puzzled why a multi-million dollar publishing conglomerate needs to receive a government bailout”?IS IT TRUE Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain, traded at $12 a share last summer. It dropped to about $6 in January before coronavirus and is trading at 90 cents a share?IS IT TRUE that the President of Deaconness Hospital Dr. James Porter, recently told the Courier and Press  “that Deaconess is testing people which also including people the State Health Department probably wouldn’t test because indicators weren’t strong enough”? …Dr. Porter also said “but we have not received any of those results back yet, so those are all out at reference labs (typically private, commercial facilities) awaiting results?  …he further added that “and of course, we don’t have a lot of visibility into what’s happening there”? …we do know that the lab that we most often primarily use is actually shipping specimens once they get them to another reference lab — because their capacity is overwhelmed.”?  …we give five (5) cheers to Dr. James Porter for being candid about the current status of testing for the Coronavirus locally and look forward to receiving a detailed update of the test these results from Dr. Porter?IS IT TRUE that over the years the Evansville Board Of Public Works has earned the reputation of not only being very political but also being a rubber stamp for the Mayor holding office at that time?  …several months ago when a professionally refined lady came before this board to discuss her RFP she was publically demeaned and insulted by the Board Chairman? … after that episode, it is our opinion that the current Board Chairman may not have the professional temperament to continue to serve on this board?IS IT TRUE we would like to thank a long-time supporter and friend Joe Wallace for his help with the City-County Observer during the time that our publisher was facing serious health problems?  …that Joe Wallace is a shining example of what true friendship is all about?IS IT TRUE don’t be surprised to see that the Vanderburgh County Council will decide to use most of the allocations of COIT funds from 2018, 2019, and 2020 to build a new addition to the Vanderburgh County jail if a few new faces are elected to this board?IS IT TRUE we are told that many people of the 5th Ward are extremely pleased with City Councilman Justin Elpers because he is extremely conservative?IS IT TRUE we are told that many people are getting tired of the way that County Councilman Tom Shelter, Jr. are treating people?  …we are told that he have become extremely authoritative and impatient? …we are told that this kind of thing happens when a person has served in public office to long? Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: Who do you considerer the most effective spokesperson concerning given updates on the Coronavirus?last_img read more

Importance of Playing

first_imgA full after-school schedule may keep your kids occupied, but it’s not necessarily the healthiest option. It turns out kids need a little unstructured “play time” for healthy development as well. Research has shown that children can develop a lot of necessary skills, such as working with others and learning how to make decisions, through child-led or unstructured play time. “The worrisome thing we’re starting to see from research is that kids now have their lives so structured that they don’t know how to play independently,” said Diane Bales, a child development specialist with University of Georgia Extension. “Teachers are reporting things like kids (constantly) need adults to tell them what to do. The kind of creativity that comes from play leads to a lot of other abilities like creative problem solving. Children are more lacking in that when they haven’t had the opportunity to make decisions on their own.” Parents should pay attention to cues such as their child’s stress levels during the school year, Bales said. When kids go from school to T-ball practice to a youth group meeting and then to soccer camp all within a few hours’ time, the child doesn’t get the needed break. Bales likens it to an adult going to 12 consecutive workshop sessions without a break: you likely wouldn’t benefit much from the last three or four sessions. “One thing we all need to have, children and adults, is quiet time,” Bales said. “You need that quiet, unstructured time to really consolidate your learning before you’re able to learn something else new. Going from activity to activity without no break, no pause, does not give you the down time to make sense of it.” Parents today feel pressure to enroll their kids in as many activities as possible, Bales said, most of it out of good intentions of wanting to expose their children to a wide variety of options. Sometimes, there’s an element of competition involved, the ancient notion of wanting to “keep up with the Joneses.” Often, the result is a crammed schedule and an exhausted child (and parents). The key, Bales said, is to seek balance — a goal she noted is easier to set than to achieve. Structured activities are fine within reason, but make time for individual or group play dates where children get to decide what to play. When kids play, they get to make all the decisions themselves, Bales said, which is a valuable skill that they need to learn. “Things like solving a disagreement with a friend over what game they’re going to play is what prepares the brain to deal with bigger life stresses,” Bales said. “Kids who never deal with little stresses have a harder time when faced with the bigger ones.”last_img read more

Arteta eyes Arsenal FA Cup run in bid to foster winning culture

first_img Loading… Mikel Arteta wants to use a run in the FA Cup to foster an ‘addiction’ to winning at Arsenal — and believes success in the competition will be key to rebuilding broken relationships with their fanbase. Arteta is ready to make his mark They entertain Leeds on Monday night with their Premier League campaign in an abysmal mess, so the onus increases on protracted involvement in the FA Cup. While Leeds could justifiably see the Cup as a distraction from their prime aim of promotion to the top flight and can be expected to field a weakened side, Arteta has talked up its importance. Arteta, who won the FA Cup twice as an Arsenal player, including the 2014 triumph that ended an nine-year wait for silverware, drew a parallel between the unease of that era under Arsene Wenger and the club’s current situation. He said: ‘When I arrived here (in 2011), obviously we were trying to fight for the Premier League abut we did not have the level to compete and sustain it. So the cups become important and obviously this club has a massive history with that. But then we’d had years without winning absolutely anything. ‘For us to lift that FA Cup was a massive relief. It generated good belief and unity around our team and helped that group of players to achieve what they achieved later when they won other cups. ‘I think winning brings togetherness and when you have beautiful experiences together and you win trophies then those experiences stay within that group. ‘You like more the people that you work with, you believe more in them, you share some fantastic moments and that habit of winning, winning, winning … after you win, you don’t want to stop winning. ‘You become addicts to that and that’s what we have to try to implement at this football club.’ On the mission to reunite the fans with the club via a Cup run, Arteta said: ‘When you take the fans to Wembley, it’s a different scenario, they are proud of it, it’s a special day, they travel with their families, they are looking for success again for this football club. ‘They are used to that, there’s a history related to that. I think it generates something special.’ The Spaniard admitted he will be unable to fulfil his ambitions at Arsenal if he fails to get the fans onside. ‘No, it’s impossible,’ he said. ‘It’s too powerful. With the fanbase we have, with our history and how much these people have been with this football club, if we get that connected, it’s powerful. Without that, I think it’s impossible.’ Meanwhile, Leeds star Ezgjan Alioski has dismissed suggestions that Arsenal are resurgent under Arteta and belittled their win over Manchester United. ‘Yes, I saw the result versus Manchester United but this Manchester United from this year — even we can beat them,’ Alioski quipped. The North Macedonia international does not lack confidence and, as if to emphasise the point, he suggested the third-round tie would soon become run of the mill for the current Championship leaders. ‘If we are in the Premier League, Leeds is going to be one of the biggest clubs, like I know they were before,’ he added. ‘Of course, it’s a big game. I like to play this game. Maybe it’s one of the biggest but I don’t see it making me nervous to think that. I hope I can have mostly bigger games than this.’ Read Also:FA Cup: Arteta warns Arsenal players ahead of Leeds clash Some might view the FA Cup as a distraction for a club aiming to end a 16-year exile from the top flight, particularly given their near-miss last season. But Alioski countered: ‘No, it’s a game. Only the name changes, to cup and not league. Garcia’s win over Khan leaves Theophane eyeing title shot

first_imgKiburn’s Ashley Theophane believes his case for a world title shot has been underlined by Amir Khan’s shock defeat against Danny Garcia. The unbeaten American destroyed Khan in the fourth round of their light-welterweight unification clash in Las Vegas on Saturday – but was pushed all the way by Theophane in 2010.Garcia won on a split points decision against the Londoner, with many believing he was fortunate to get the verdict.Theophane also boasts victories over Delvin Rodriguez and former world champion DeMarcus Corley, who have both since secured world title challenges.Another London boxer, Kentish Town’s Nigerian-born Ajose Olusegun, is next in line to face Garcia. But Theophane, a product of the All Stars Boxing Gym in Westboune Park, believes his time will come.Trainer Don Charles on Theophane“I feel like I’d deserve a world title shot and I’m sure in the future it will happen.” Theophane told West London Sport.“I’m not sure about a fight with Garcia at this moment because he’s got a mandatory defence against Ajose, who I know well, and I don’t know if he’ll come through that.“But I would definitely take the opportunity if it comes my way in the future and I deserve it.“Even Garcia thought I won when we fought. I’ve also beaten Corley and Rodriguez – and look at the fights they’ve gone on to have.“What the Amir Khan result showed again is that I’m a lot better than the boxing experts in Britain think I am.“I’ve already got respect in America, but it shows the British people that I’m a fighter to be reckoned with.“I’m seen as high-risk though, so I don’t think any of the world champions are going to want to make a voluntary defence against me.“What I need to do is get back on the winning path and work my way up the rankings to a position of mandatory challenger.”Theophane, often based in the United States, is scheduled to return to the ring in North Carolina on 24 August. It will be the 31-year-old’s first outing since losing the British title to Darren Hamilton in May – a setback he does not believe will derail his world title bid. There has even been talk of a fight between Theophane and Khan, whose frailties were badly exposed by Garcia. But Theophane said: “I’m not going to go calling people out and kicking a man when he’s down just because he lost.“Khan should have won that fight and I thought he would. Now he hasn’t, I still believe he’ll come back from it.“He just fought the wrong kind of fight. Garcia is a puncher and likes people to come towards him.“Garcia has slow feet and doesn’t like fighters who move around and box with their brain like I did against him.“His best performances have been against people who’ve tried to be macho. The way to beat him is to use brain not brawn.”Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Pushing Beyond Failure

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now When you lift weights, the last rep is often the rep that causes you to fail. You’re not strong enough to push the weight one more time. But it is your final attempt that causes your muscles to tear, repair, and eventually grow.Eventually, you are strong enough to lift the heavier weight. Again you fail on the final rep. Sometimes you can get stuck, and you plateau at a certain weight. No matter how hard you try to push the weight, you struggle, and you fail again. But you never judge yourself a failure because you couldn’t lift a heavy weight. Instead, you keep trying, and you keep pushing yourself. You know at some point that you will have a breakthrough. In other endeavors, you attach some negative meaning to failure. You believe that failure somehow defines you. In some cases, you don’t even want to try again. But this analogy to weightlifting is more accurate than any negative meaning you might attach to failure. It’s simply an event. Failure is how you get stronger. It’s how you learn some of the most important lessons that you need to succeed.Every time you lift weights you push yourself to lift a little bit heavier. You try to do a couple additional reps or even an additional set. You believe that you get stronger by pushing past failure. You believe that this is how you grow, and you are right. But this same idea applies to every other area of your life. Are you pushing yourself beyond your perceived limits? Or are you doing the same things over and over because you are comfortable?last_img read more

Manchester City plan new Jonny Evans bid but Pep Guardiola wary of rising fee

first_imgPlay Video Pep Guardiola Read more Share on Messenger At 29 Evans will have little or no sell-on value and, while City recognise it is an inflated market, the club will switch to other options should West Brom demand what they believe is an unrealistic price. While an offer in the region of £25m plus add-ons may cause Albion to consider Evans’s sale, Guardiola is also insistent that, if his central defence cannot be strengthened, he will still be content.“We try to do the best squad as possible for the long season,” said Guardiola . “We are going to see how the market finishes at the end of the window. If we have to stay with the players we have right now we are happy. If someone comes we are happy too. I know how good the club works since I arrive here and we try to do our best. Sometimes it’s possible, sometimes not. Nothing to say.“It is like last season. Every season I start I always believe my players are the best. We talk with the club, with the sporting director Txiki [Begiristain], with all the players. We talk – everyone has his own opinions and after that we are decide what is best to make our club stronger. He’s [Evans] a player for West Brom. It’s still the same. Tony Pulis was clear so there’s nothing to talk about.” news Pep Guardiola pays tribute to Barcelona terror attack victims – video Share on Facebook 0:36 West Bromwich Albion Share on Pinterest Transfer windowcenter_img Share on WhatsApp Premier League: 10 talking points from the opening weekend’s action Manchester City Topics Share via Email Share on LinkedIn Manchester City will not be held to ransom over Jonny Evans, with Pep Guardiola having identified other options at centre-back should West Bromwich Albion not agree with their valuation of the Northern Irishman.City are set to make a renewed bid for Evans after having one in the region of £18m rejected by the Midlands club. Tony Pulis made Evans West Brom captain after Darren Fletcher left for Stoke City and the manager is adamant City will have to offer an acceptable fee if he is to be transferred. However, Evans is keen on the move, which Pulis admitted. “We don’t want to stop him from doing something he wants to do,” said the manager.Guardiola denied that, if Evans or any new player is added, this will send a negative message to the club’s academy players. The 17-year-old Phil Foden was on the bench for Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion. Centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo, 19, is another home-reared youngster in Guardiola’s first-team squad.“I think the academy players, the big ones and important ones, are already here. They don’t play in the first team just for the fact they are in academy. They have to win that situation. They are with us in the beginning, train with us at the beginning and it depends after that with the same quality for the other guys who are here,” said Guardiola.Kyle Walker missed the midweek friendly at Girona as his wife is expecting. But Guardiola expects the right-back to start against Everton on Monday.“His wife is pregnant,” said the 46-year-old. “He is almost a father again so that’s why he waits here [and not travel] for a beautiful moment.”Ilkay Gundogan, who missed most of last season due to a knee injury, made a comeback at Girona. “He played a few minutes so we are going to see when he will play a competitive match,” Guardiola said. “He is really well and training well. He needs time and confidence. When you have the problems he had in the past with injuries in the last two years he has to be 100 per cent sure he is ready. But he played a few minutes and that is the first step.” Share on Twitter Reuse this contentlast_img read more
