From Parliament Street to Parliament Dalits Assert Political Will on Ambedkar Jayanti

first_imgNew Delhi: The BJP’s atrocities have awakened the Dalits, says 28-year-old Arjun Singh. According to him, the last five years have worked in the favour of his community. “Dalits are more united today, more politically aware and assertive because of the injustices under BJP’s rule,” he says.Singh, a resident of Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, has been coming to the Parliament Street in New Delhi on Ambedkar Jayanti for five years now. On April 14, the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, and the only day when the Parliament opens its gates to the public, thousands of Dalits, young and old, throng the Sansad Marg. The premises are dotted with serpentine queues of people, who eagerly wait for their turn to pay respects to the iconic Amedkar statue located inside Parliament. This year, the longstanding tradition gains special significance in the backdrop of the Lok Sabha elections, which are currently underway. On Sunday, the 128th birth anniversary of Ambedkar, Singh stood in line for an hour in Parliament, but came out beaming. So did 42-year-old Sanjay Kumar, who has been making the ritual visit to the statue for 15 years. “This is the biggest turnout I have ever seen. Maybe because it’s a Sunday, maybe because it’s elections. But out community is also more aware now,” Kumar says.As thousands congregate at the Sansad Marg, the Jantar Mantar and all the way to Parliament building, the mood is palpably political, with elections steering conversations on all sides. Amid the dozens of stalls on either side of the iconic street, there are many which assert the political will of the Dalit community. One such pop-up is by Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan’s Bhim Army, a party representing the Dom community. Even Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) merchandise is on the cards, with several stalls devoted to the sale of products flashing BSP pride. The dominant dress code is blue, spotted and sported in the flowing fabric of sarees, the sinewy folds of t-shirts and stiff collared shirts. The air crackles with slogans like ‘Jai Bhim’ as the sea of blue sweeps over the street, chanting in unison. This march to Parliament is symbolic. It is where the community wants representation. Pankaj Raj, 28, an engineer employed at a private firm, believes Dalit mobilisation must lead to unified political assertion. “There is a huge crowd here today. I want it to convert into votes, into representation,” he says.Raj recognises the importance of 2019 elections not just for his community, but for all the people his age. “The biggest issue in the last five years is the rising unemployment. Government jobs are going empty. There is no hiring for permanent vacancies,” he says. “The youth doesn’t want a temple or a mosque. They want jobs,” he adds. 30-year-old Ajay Kumar, who has come all the way from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, says the current government has systematically worked against Dalit upliftment. “Last five years have been the worst for us,” he says, “They tried to impose the 13-point roster (for reservation in teaching jobs in higher education), they brought in 10 percent reservation for the General community, they fuelled atrocities against us in Una, Bhima Koregaon, Muzaffarnagar.” According to him, the mass of people gathered at Sansad Marg is proof of rising Dalit assertion. “More leaders from our community are emerging in the political fray, Chandrashekhar Azad, Jignesh Mevani. It makes me happy to see this,” he says.Singh, however, is concerned about how the rise of Dalit political expression is amiss in the dominant public discourse of media. “Wherever you see on television, it’s only Modi. How many rallies of Mayawati ji are covered? Look at today. Lakhs from our community are standing in front of the parliament. Do you see any news channel cameras?” he says, echoing the larger sentiment of discontent brewing within the community. Even when Dalits are represented in the media, they are used as tokens, says Eklavya Ambedkar, who runs a Dalit publication in Lucknow. “When elections come you see Modi washing our feets on television. But his government is working to break our legs,” he says.According to Singh, the unification of Dalit sentiment started in April last year, when the community protested against changes in the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The Bharat Band, that saw lakhs of Dalits take to the streets, created a feeling of unity, Singh says. “Our people came of the roads and fought back. They now know that BJP is the enemy.”25-year-old Aman, resident of Mayur Vihar, says that he wasn’t very involved in community movements earlier. But April 2 changed that. “That year I came to Parliament Street on 14 April for the first time. This is the second time I’m here and I’m getting goose bumps all over again,” Aman says, who is accompanied by his family this time. For Singh, the battle is bigger than this, one that fights not just for Dalit rights, but also to safeguard India’s constitution. “Baba sahib drafted our constitution that provided equal rights and opportunities to all. BJP is trying to burn the constitution. And if they come back to power, they will succeed,” he says. New Technology Developed by Cochin University of Science and Technology May Help

first_imgHyderabad: The National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) is working on a new technology in aquaculture to help double the income of Indian farmers, an official said on Monday. The institute has recently established a ‘Backyard Re-circulatory Aquaculture System’ developed by Cochin University of Science and Technology. The system, an intensive fish culture pond, enables high density stocking of fish in cages. This would allow off-setting of the load by stocking different varieties and sizes of fish in smaller cages in a pond, the institute said in a statement.Since the water requirement for this system is quite low, the high-density stocking of fish in different cages enables flexibility in managing a fishpond.”We can only double the income of farmers by promoting integrated farming practices. Such technology-backed smart farming solutions will encourage youth to undertake farming as an occupation,” said W.R. Reddy, Director General at NIRDPR.This system, inaugurated at the Institute’s Rural Technology Park, was established with funding support of the National Fisheries Development Board, a government organisation. Fish varieties that can be grown in the system include Tilapia, Pangasius, Murrel and Pearlspot. The economics of growing Genetically Improved Farm Tilapia (GIFT) in the pond, for a stocking period of 120 days over three cycles per year, demonstrates that an average monthly return of Rs 25,750 can be expected from fish culture. The aquaculture system can act as a source of additional income for farmers located even in low water availability areas, helping them double their income, the statement said. In addition, the sludge periodically pumped out of the pond can be utilised to grow agriculture crops without the addition of chemical fertilizers, it said. Given that the intensive fish culture does not require to be limited in geography to coastal areas, it can also be used in inland areas, further confirming the flexibility of the system. The Rural Technology Park at NIRDPR will demonstrate the functioning of the system and provide necessary training to farmers, self-help groups (SHGs) and youth who are keen on undertaking fish culture for enhancing their income. agricultureCochin University of Science and TechnologyIncomeIndian farmers First Published: July 8, 2019, 4:17 PM ISTlast_img read more

Mainstream Cinema is Every Film That People Love to Watch Says Ayushmann

first_imgActor Ayushmann Khurrana, whose filmography is as versatile as it gets, says the world of cinema must not discriminate by bracketing content into mainstream and others. An actor who is against talent and content being labelled, Ayushmann will soon be seen in Article 15, a film on the subject of discrimination. “The validation that I have got with my back-to-back successes with Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Bareilly Ki Barfi has driven me to stay on the path of giving audiences quality, entertaining cinema that they would want to come to the theatres to watch,” he said. “To me, mainstream is an abused word. For me, mainstream cinema is every film that people simply love to watch because of reasons that are personal to them. The world has progressed to being anti-label, high time our industry too moves away from labelling audiences and films,” he added. He feels the way mainstream has been defined so far has been extremely skewed and discriminatory. “Every film has its set of audience and not every film is meant to appeal to everyone. That’s the beauty of films. It’s subjective, it evokes an intimate and highly personal reaction and entertains like-minded people,” he said.”Just because a film’s appeal doesn’t conform to what some would think as pan Indian, doesn’t make it a non-mainstream film. One immediately judges films with a different sensibility and to me that’s hugely discriminatory. I have fought this discrimination and will continue to do so all my career. Thankfully, my content choices have worked and proved that there is an audience for every kind of film.”We shouldn’t see filmmaking through just one filter of it being a pan India mass entertainer. We take the meaning and beauty out of making films by doing this. It is a medium of bold creative expressions and we should celebrate everyone’s work and be inclusive about ideas and opinions. Every film has a different purpose and it’s great to have powerful and different voices and ideas,” he added.Follow @News18Movies for more. Chandrababu Naidu Vows to Fight for Transparency in Election Process after SC

first_imgNew Delhi: After the Supreme Court junked some opposition parties’ review plea for 50 per cent VVPAT verification in the Lok Sabha polls, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu Tuesday said he would not give up the fight for transparency in the election process.Twenty-one opposition leaders, including Naidu, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, CPI leader D Raja and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, had filed a plea seeking review of the apex court’s April 8 order directing the Election Commission to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment. The opposition parties had demanded that the number be raised to 50 per cent of total booths.”We respect the Supreme Court’s order…but the party will not give up and continue its fight for transparency in the election process in the country. It’s absolutely critical for the EC to work transparently to ensure free and fair elections,” Naidu said in a statement. The Election Commission should be responsible for the honest execution of the Supreme Court’s April 8 order. In case of any discrepancy, voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips should be matched with EVM results in the entire constituency, the Telugu Desam Party chief said.On the EC’s claim that the counting of all VVPAT slips may delay the results by five days, Naidu said, “It’s just a matter of a few days. The poll panel should choose credibility and transparency over other things.”The TDP had earlier alleged large-scale EVM malfunctioning in Andhra Pradesh during the April 11 elections for the 25 Lok Sbha seats and to elect a new 175-member Assembly. andhra-pradesh-lok-sabha-elections-2019Lok Sabha elections 2019N Chandrababu Naidusupreme court First Published: May 7, 2019, 6:23 PM ISTlast_img read more

Spent Lavishly But Left State in BIMARU Condition MP Finance Minister Hits

first_imgBhopal: Madhya Pradesh Finance minister Tarun Bhanot on Wednesday alleged the Centre’s tax contribution to states had been shrinking over the last few years and this was primarily because of the botched-up implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).Soon after presenting the Budget in the MP Assembly, Bhanot said, “Recently, finance ministers of various states had called on their Union counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi, many of them complained about the dwindling tax contribution from the Centre,” Bhanot said. The minister said it was all because of the Centre’s faulty implementation of GST which led to revenue downfall in last the few years and states’ tax share also diminished accordingly. He said the reason behind imposition of cess on petrol and diesel was because of less allocation of funds by the Centre.Replying to a query whether Rs 8,000 crore additional allocation of funds for farm loan waiver would be sufficient, the minister said the provision was besides the earlier allocation of Rs 5,000 crore. “We will arrange funds as and when needed,” he added. When pointed out that he was talking about dwindling tax share from the Centre and still the budget provisioned an increase of around 18 to 20% in tax revenue generation, the minister said the state government was planning to restructure tax collection from sectors like transport, mining and excise. “We have raised bar licence renewal fee from 15 to 20% and introduced online auction for sand mining,” said the minister.Referring to the Economic Survey that has put the state in 27th spot among 29 states in terms of poverty, Bhanot hit out at previous BJP government that claimed to have taken the state out of the BIMARU (sick) list. The minister also slammed the former Shivraj Singh Chouhan government for taking unnecessary loans, especially after 2012. “Kharcha khoob hua, par BIMARU banakar chhora (they spent lavishly, but left the state in a BIMARU condition).” Asked to specify whether he meant that MP was a sick state, he refused to delve further. Present with Bhanot, Public Relations Minister PC Sharma said though the BJP had left the state in a BIMARU form, the Congress government would soon transform it. Soon after, Bhanot asked reporters to focus on ‘relevant Budget questions’ and have a chat with the PR minister later.Asked about outstanding dues of the state government, a senior government officer said as on March 31, 2018, the state had liabilities worth Rs 1,52,745 crore, while it expected the figure to rise to Rs 1.80 lakh crore by March 31, 2019. Nvidias AI Playground lets you edit photos experience deep learning research

first_imgOn Monday, March 18, Nvidia launched A.I. Playground, a new online space where anyone can experience all the raw power of deep learning research. The new website currently features three demos for image editing, styling, as well as photorealistic image synthesis. As a part of this new online space, you can upload your own image and edit photos and experience Nvidia’s “Imagine InPainting” research project. The technology uses the power of artificial intelligence and can edit your images by removing certain content and filling in the resulting holes. Researchers used Nvidia Tesla V100 GPUs as part of their original work on this project. This was originally published last spring at the International Conference on Learning Representations in New Orleans.A second demo in the online space allows you to demo Nvidia’s “Artistic Style Transfer” project. This experience takes the aesthetics of a primary uploaded image and can apply it to a second image with realistic results. For instance, you can upload a photo of yourself and have it returned to you painted in the style of a Vincent van Gogh piece. Originally announced in August 2018, researchers behind this project leveraged the power of Nvidia Titan XP GPUs. Researchers also had to train a convolutional neural network on 80,000 images of people, scenery, animals and moving objects as part of this research project. The final available demo is of Nvidia’s photorealistic image synthesis model. This uses conditional generative adversarial networks to create photorealistic images and virtual environments. Using Nvidia’s Quadro GPUs, the technology behind this system was originally disclosed in June 2018 at the annual Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference in Salt Lake City. There are plans to add more demos in the future, and Nvidia believes this new experience is for people with a wide range of interests, including photo editing. “Research papers have new ideas in them and are really cool, but they’re directed at specialized audiences. We’re trying to make our research more accessible. The A.I. Playground allows everyone to interact with our research and have fun with it,” Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning research at Nvidia, said in a statement.Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference is underway in San Jose, California, and you can expect to hear more about artificial intelligence, gaming, cloud services, science, robotics, data centers, and deep learning throughout the four-day event. Spitzer captures childhood middle age and maturity of stars in one image

first_img Editors’ Recommendations A mosaic by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope of the Cepheus C and Cepheus B regions. This image combines data from Spitzer’s IRAC and MIPS instruments. NASA/JPL-CaltechNASA’s Spitzer telescope has captured a stunning images of a pair of nebulas containing the star clusters Cepheus B and Cepheus C.The majority of the image shows the main nebula, which is a cloud of dust and gas that appears in green and orange. The bright red region at the top right is the tip of the nebula, where bright stars give out radiation which heats the dust and creates a glow. These bright, massive stars are part of a star cluster which extends beyond the edges of the image. This region is the remains of a larger cloud which has been whittled down by radiation from the stars over time. There is a second, smaller nebula visible on the right hand side of the image. The cluster of pink and white lights in the bottom right are a young nebula which includes a “runaway star.” The runaway is the blue star with a red arc around in the right-hand middle of the image. The red arc is a shockwave caused by the star traveling through the nebula at high speed, creating a bow of matter in front of it.Another feature visible on the left hand middle of the image is a band of darker color in the nebula. This area is called Cepheus C, and is a dense area of dust and gas which acts as a stellar nursery. Stars are rapidly born here due to the density of materials which allow them to form. As these baby stars grow they produce winds which push away nearby dust, creating more pockets of dense material. This process produces the beautiful shapes of the nebula. Eventually, when the dust clears, the stars remain in their clusters like those in the top right of the image, which is Cepheus B.This image is compiled from data from two different instruments: Spitzer’s Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS). The IRAC instrument collects data in the near- and mid-infrared spectrum (wavelengths between 3.6 and 8.0 microns), and the MIPS collects data in the far-infrared spectrum (wavelengths of 24, 70 and 160 microns). Cyberattack targets British lawmakers

first_imgWhile the US still tries to sort out how Russian cyberattacks played an influence on the recent presidential election, the British Parliament is currently experiencing its own attack from hackers this weekend. News reports say the country’s lawmakers have been left unable to use or access their email as a result of a “sustained and determined” cyberattack from unknown individuals. Parliamentary authorities say their computer networks were subject to unusual activity on Saturday morning, and have identified that the hackers are attempting to identify weak email passwords on parliamentary user accounts. The House of Commons has revealed that it’s working with Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre to secure the network, and that the investigation is still ongoing. As a precautionary measure, parliamentary users are unable to access the network outside of the Palace of Westminster. As a result of this and other solutions, the authorities believe they’ve protected the accounts and systems under threat.Britain has been dealing with several cyber security issues recently, with account information for tens of thousands of government officials turning up on Russian hacking websites. Android edition DxO One camera released today in Early Access mode

first_imgIncluded in the DxO release for this device is the following sentence: “In addition to helping improve the overall user experience by sharing their feedback with DxO, Early Access participants will receive regular firmware updates with all the latest features.” Notice how they’ve just turned “sharing their feedback” into a feature by cramming it into the sentence which puts firmware updates in a positive light.Regardless of the feedback users will be giving to DxO for free, the company is charging full price for the camera. That means around $500 USD. They’ve announced a couple of free add-ons to make the situation seem a bit more user-friendly. These “free” add-ons to the Early Access package are one Outdoor Shell + Cable Back Door, and one license code for the software DxO PhotoLab. Usually these two together would cost around $250 USD.The DxO One has a 1-inch sensor and is 20.2-megapixels strong. It works with an f/1.8 aperture and can capture photographs in RAW format. The first version of this camera was made exclusively for iOS devices from Apple. This camera is made by the same people who provide camera assessments for all manner of cameras from all parts of the industry. Most famous, perhaps, is their mobile smartphone camera ratings system, a system which Google currently cites as proof that their Google Pixel smartphones have cameras superior to all others. Keep in mind that regardless of the way DxO positions themselves as the authority on camera quality, this DxO One isn’t necessarily just the bees knees. Intel gets its game on with Radeon RX Vega M VR NUC

first_imgSmall form factor computers, like 2-in-1 tablets, light notebooks, and mini PCs, have traditionally been limited in the graphical capabilities because of the constraints of space. While some notebooks do have laptop-class discrete graphics chips, they take up a lot more space than a normal integrated GPU.Intel’s solution to that is its new Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge or EMIB. This is basically a high-speed highway that allows data to travel quickly over short distances between the GPU, in this case the Radeon RX Vega M, and High Bandwidth Memory or HBM2. Not only does this make data transfer faster, it also reduces the amount of space the CPU, GPU, and graphics memory occupy. That theory is being put to the test in Intel’s latest gen NUC, a.k.a the Next Unit of Computing. Powered by an 8th gen Intel Core i7 with Radeon RX Vega M graphics, the 1.2-liter box has enough horsepower to drive VR experiences. On paper, this makes it one of the most portable VR rigs in the market.Intel is offering two configuration for the new chip. One has a Radeon RX Vega M GL, which only has 65 W TDP and powers the NUC8i7HNK. The other utilizes a Radeon RX Vega M GH and sacrifices power efficiency, now up to 100 W TDP, for more muscle and an unlocked configuration. This processor drives the NUC8i7HVK.SOURCE: Intel (1), (2) Intel might be receiving a lot of flak lately for the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, but the chip maker is unfazed and continues moving forward against all odds. Proof is that at CES, it revealed a new 8th gen Intel Core processor that lies in bed with long-time rival AMD to add a Radeon RX Vega M Graphics chip in the same package. Geared towards gamers, content creators, and graphics-intensive applications, this new processor powers Intel’s new NUC, making it the world’s smallest VR-capable computer.last_img read more

Apple may rebate iPhone batteries replaced prethrottling discount

first_imgApple may placate iPhone owners who paid full-price for battery replacements before it discounted the scheme as a mea-culpa over iOS throttling. The Cupertino firm unexpectedly found itself the center of a wrath-storm late last year, when it admitted that it had been limiting the performance of older iPhones that had degraded batteries. Story TimelineApple Stores reportedly waiving health checks for $29 iPhone batteryiPhone battery replacements delayed as Apple runs outiOS 11.3 battery throttling switch gives older iPhones the choice The system initially impacted the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, and was later extended to cover the iPhone 7. Apple’s hope had been to avoid unexpected shutdowns of the handsets, caused when their aging batteries were unable to provide the peak power demanded by system-intensive apps and services. However, while Apple intended it to be imperceivable to the end-user, that proved not to be the case. Instead, the revelation of the system was seen by many as a confession of planned-obsolescence, even as Apple argued that it still believed it was the best way to handle the shutdown issue. While the company refused to change course on the fix, it did agree to add a toggle allowing owners to turn off the process in a future version of iOS. That will be iOS 11.3, set to be released later this year. It also discounted its iPhone battery replacement scheme for affected phones. Rather than $79 to switch out the smartphone’s old battery for a new one, it would charge just $29. Apple also softened its policies on what battery pack degradation tests the iPhones must pass before being eligible for the replacements. AdChoices广告The plan had initially been to begin the discounted replacements early in 2018, a timescale which was later changed, and the $29 swaps begin in December 2017. However, that still leaves plenty of people who paid full-price for a battery replacement, and now it seems Apple is trying to decide what to do with them. It comes after Republican lawmaker Senator John Thune asked the Cupertino firm about the topic. “Has Apple explored whether consumers who paid the full, non-discounted price for a replacement batter in an effort to restore performance should be allowed to seek a rebate for some of the purchase price?” Thune, who heads the Commerce Committee, wrote in a letter to Apple last month. A reply from Cynthia Hogan, Apple’s Vice President for public policy in the Americas, released this week confirmed it was being considered, Recode reports. “Yes, we are exploring this and will update you accordingly,” Hogan wrote. Whether that will pan out to a retroactive discount – and, if so, how much that might amount to – is unclear at this stage. The reasons for getting a battery replaced are clearly more than just trying to avoid a slow-down issue most people didn’t realize was in operation, after all. Meanwhile, as Apple has maintained throughout this process, lithium-ion batteries naturally degrade as they age, and it’s beyond the scope of realistic expectation that they should hold the same charge 2-3 years into ownership of an iPhone that they did on day one. last_img read more

Windows App Preview Program offers early apps without raw OS

first_imgMicrosoft will allow users to try the latest version of apps without necessarily needing to be using the most cutting-edge – and potentially unstable – build of Windows 10. The Windows App Preview Program will offer Windows Insiders – members of Microsoft’s open software testing scheme – to get their hands on the newest software from the company, without necessarily going the whole hog with their OS. Story TimelineWindows 10 Pro Ultimate Performance mode is what power users were waiting for Currently, if you want to try the very latest version of Microsoft apps like Microsoft Photos and Paint 3D, you also need to be part of the Skip Ahead program. That’s a subset of Windows Insider membership, which has offered the bleeding-edge of Windows 10 versions for desktop and server users willing to test out code that’s a little more raw. Not everybody, though, lists this all-or-nothing approach. “We heard feedback from Windows Insiders that having to opt-in to Skip Ahead to receive the latest app updates wasn’t ideal as it required Insiders to also be on super-early and sometimes unstable builds of the OS,” Microsoft‘s Dona Sarkar and Brandon LeBlanc said. “Insiders told us they wanted to be able to try out the latest app updates but be on the latest Insider Preview builds from the Fast, Slow, and Release Preview rings.”The result is the new Windows App Preview Program. Open to any Windows Insider, no matter which stage of the preview you’re actually using, it’ll allow earlier access on a per-app basis. Initially, there’ll be ten apps that are included:AdChoices广告Feedback HubMicrosoft PhotosMicrosoft Sticky NotesMicrosoft TipsPaint 3DWindows Alarms & ClockWindows CalculatorWindows CameraWindows Mixed Reality ViewerWindows Voice RecorderRather than gaining access to every app in one fell swoop, Microsoft will be offering preview membership to each individually. Head to the Settings or About page and, at the bottom, there’ll be a “Join preview” option to check out the latest version. When you’re part of the preview, clicking the button again will leave it and return to the regular, most stable public version.Membership to each app preview will be limited, however, Microsoft warns. If the current round of preview invites has been used up, you’ll get a notification telling you to wait for another slot. Skip Ahead members will continue to get the very latest versions installed by default. Microsoft says the Windows App Preview Program will start rolling out invites in the next few days.last_img read more

Electric GT created fully electric Ferrari because Ferrari wont

first_imgElectric cars, or even just hybrids, are all the rage these days, especially considering all the pressure on car makers to be more eco-friendly. Some, however, consider electric engines a poor fit for a certain brand of cars. One of those is Ferrari, whose CEO considered it unnerving how the Tesla Model S is so eerily quiet. So what are electric car and Ferrari fans to do? Why, make their own, of course. Risking being burned at the stake, that is exactly what Electric GT did when it converted a burned up Ferrari 308 GTS into the world’s first, but unofficial, all-electric Ferrari. Yes, burned up, used up Ferrari. That was probably the only way they’d even be implicitly allowed to mutate a Ferrari into such an abomination. This particular car suffered a fuel leak that burned the engine and much of its wiring. No problem for Electric GT, as they weren’t really interested in the engine anyway. The team yanked out the V8 engine and replaced it instead with three electric motors. That’s how many are practically needed to match the diesel engine’s power. Together, they produce 275 of electric hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. That much power requires a lot of electricity, which is provided by 48 lithium ion cells, with a combined total of 28.5 kWh.All of that adds 100 lbs more to the whole contraption compared to a normal Ferrari 308 GTS, about 3,350 lbs in total. And for all that work, the Electric Ferrari can only travel 80 to 100 miles on a single full charge. Not that much, of course, but what Ferrari can boast of a fully electric engine anyway?AdChoices广告The whole fun, hopefully for Electric GT, does prove Ferrari’s point. Externally, especially after a well needed paint and repair job, the fully electric Ferrari doesn’t look any different from its diesel siblings. Once the engine starts however and the car hits the road, the only noise you’ll hear will be from the gravel and dust the Ferrari kicks up and not from the engine itself. For some more eco-conscious owners and makers, that might be a worthwhile tradeoff. For others, that’s blasphemy.VIA: Jalopniklast_img read more

2017 Ford Fusion First Drive Midsize sedan blurs traditional luxury sport lines

first_imgWhen you’ve got a top-five mid-size sedan in your fleet – like the Blue Oval does with the Ford Fusion – you’ve got to take extra care when revising any of the details that have made it such a popular option with bread-and-butter four-door buyers. By combining affordability, style, and one of the most versatile under-hood options list in its segment, the Fusion has managed to stay within striking distance of heavyweights like the Toyota Camry, the Nissan Altima, and the Honda Accord while outpacing its domestic rival, the Chevrolet Malibu. For 2017, a series of updates have been implemented to give the new Ford Fusion a performance edge it’s been lacking, as well improve on the technologies it has to offer family shoppers. The current model year brings a few extra horsepower and a small bump in torque for the 2.0-liter motor, giving it 245 horses and 275 lb-ft of twist in total. As with all gas-only versions of the Fusion, this model is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and also offers the unique choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive. Only the Subaru Legacy provides mid-size all-wheel drive outside a Ford showroom. Power delivery is smooth from the four-cylinder EcoBoost mill, and handling is good, if not quite as sharp as what’s been promised by the Sport’s trick suspension setup. If you’re looking to balance fuel economy and power, then you may be more interested in the 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder motor that’s also available with the Ford Fusion. Capable of generating 181 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, the smaller unit turns in 29-mpg in combined driving, which undercuts the front-wheel drive 2.0-liter by three miles per gallon. There’s also the entry-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder to consider, what with its 175 ponies and 175 lb-ft of torque – an engine that doesn’t benefit from the use of a turbocharger, but which comes close to matching the 1.5-liter EcoBoost’s efficiency figures in real-world driving. The ultimate in fuel savings, of course, comes from either the Ford Fusion Hybrid or the plug-in version of the same, the Fusion Energi. Both models yoke a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gas engine to a single electric motor to produce a total of 188 horsepower, but the Energi adds the wrinkle of a bigger battery that unlocks close to 22 miles of EV-mode driving at speeds of 80-mph. When operating in hybrid mode, you’re looking at 43-mpg in stop and go driving and 41-mpg on the highway, which is essentially what was on offer in 2016 models as well. The battery-assisted versions of the Fusion are starting to feel a little long in the tooth in terms of performance, especially considering the advancements made by some of the Ford sedan’s hybrid competitors, but hyper-milers will be happy with the Energi’s impressive EV capability. With a starting price of under $23,000, a ceiling of $45,000 for a Platinum PHEV, and a shockingly modest $35k ask for the Sport, the 2017 Ford Fusion spans almost every conceivable mid-size sedan niche. It also happens to one of the better-looking, and rewarding to drive members of its peer group. The refreshed version of the Fusion demonstrates just how blurry the line has become between the luxury world and the rest of the market, and how much everyday car buyers stand to benefit as the gap between features, performance, and value continues to narrow. Story Timeline2017 Ford Fusion V6 Sport offers 325hp 2.7L EcoBoost V62016 Ford Mustang GT Convertible 5.0 California Special Review2017 Ford Escape First Drive – Turbocharging EvolutionHere’s What 3 Hot Laps Will Tell You About Ford’s Fastest Mustangcenter_img To look at it, you’d be hard pressed to spot the differences between the 2017 Ford Fusion and the model it replaces. Squint and you’ll see the tweaked grille, and if you look a little harder you’ll notice new wheels and new LED lighting up front. It gets a little easier once you open the door and slide behind the wheel, as Ford has updated the car’s center stack design and added a rotary shift controlled in place of a traditional stalk. Then there’s the presence of the latest SYNC 3 infotainment system, which offers a more intuitive interface compared to the previous iteration that had a reputation for confounding users with slower than average response times.Ford has also added the new Platinum trim level to the Fusion’s order sheet for 2017, joining luminaries such as the F-150 pickup and the Expedition / Explorer SUV on the list of models that can be loaded to the gills with equipment you’d typically only find in a luxury vehicle. In the case of the mid-size Fusion it’s the higher-quality leather (over what you’d find in the previous range-topper, the Titanium trim) that stands out the most, although you also get the full whammy of the sedan’s available packages when spec’ing the car in Platinum form, as well as a few telltale flourishes on the outside of the vehicle. The Platinum isn’t the only new Ford Fusion model joining the party for 2017. In a move that throws down the gauntlet in the direction of nearly ever other mainstream family sedan, the Ford Fusion Sport provides pilots with a 325 horsepower, 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that’s also good for a stiff 380 lb-ft of torque. Matched with standard all-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic transmission, big brakes, and an adaptive suspension system, the Fusion Sport’s slick looks are backed up by performance that should crush mid-size competitors in both a straight line and through the corners. This is premium car power and handling in a package that costs much less than a similarly-capable BMW or Audi, and it’s a bold move from Ford to attract customers who may have never before considered the brand.I wish I could tell you what the 2017 Ford Fusion Sport was like to drive through the mountains perched just north of Montreal, Quebec surrounding the town of Mont-Tremblant, but unfortunately the adrenaline-enhanced sedan won’t make it to the streets for at least another few months. Instead, I was given the chance to sample the familiar (although slightly-tweaked) 2.0-liter, four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo version of the Fusion, alongside the Fusion Energi PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle).last_img read more

Google shutting down in April will take content down with it

first_imgGoogle+’s shutdown for consumers will be total and irrevocable. Come April 2nd, anyone with a Google+ account or a Google+ page will no longer be able to access them. More importantly, however, all content you’ve ever uploaded, be it photos, videos, or files, will be deleted as well. So the remaining few users will have to download their content before that day arrives.Apps and services that make use of Google+ API, including Sign-in and OAuth, also have to mind their deadline. While APIs will completely shut down on March 7, some might already start to fail beforehand. Of course, this doesn’t affect the more general Google Sign-in API.In contrast to what Google is doing for its Hangouts shutdown, it is keeping Google+ alive for G Suite users. You know, those who pay for the service. That said, it’s probably only a matter of time before Google sunset Google+ here as well, though it will have to think of a migration strategy before it does. Google+ has had a long life, actually longer than anyone expected. What was supposed to be Google’s social hub almost turned into a ghost town, populated only by Google and Android developers. It was really only a matter of time and Google+ will finally be shutting down in April, at least for consumers. Before that happens, however, users might have to remember to pack up their stuff and move out first.last_img read more

Polestar 2 Androidpowered dashboard revealed – and a surprise

first_imgCar dashboards are about to get more interesting, with Volvo’s electric performance brand Polestar revealing a sneak preview of the Android-based Google HMI that the companies have been collaborating on. Set to grace the touchscreen of the upcoming Polestar 2, the Swedish automaker’s all-electric car, the new interface will be among the first to be completely based on Android. Now, Polestar is showing us what its interface will look like. Although the Polestar 2 won’t be fully revealed for a while yet, the automaker has launched a virtual version of its Android-powered interface that you can try on your phone or tablet. Clearly, without a car to actually control, you’re not going to be doing much with the UI, but it’s a good way to see how Android apps might coexist in the dashboard. There’s also an Easter egg in there, too. Earlier this month, Polestar teased us with a partial view of the Polestar 2’s rear, showing the trunk-spanning light bar of the all-electric Model 3 competitor. Tap into the camera section of this new Sensus preview, however, and you can see the whole top of the car, including its panoramic glass roof. Polestar expects the four-door fastback EV to have a 300 mile range and around 400 horsepower, though final specifications won’t be confirmed until later on. Production is expected to kick off shortly after the Polestar 1 – a more premium gas-electric hybrid coupe – later this year. We’ll know more at the Geneva Motor Show 2019, when the Polestar 2 will make its official debut. Certainly, Android is no stranger to the dashboard currently. An increasing number of vehicles support Android Auto, the projection system which allows an Android phone’s display to be mirrored – with a driver-friendly interface – on the car’s own touchscreen. Volvo, Polestar, and Google are going several steps further than that, however. This new Google HMI system isn’t based on a connected phone: it’s the core UX of the car. The deal, announced back in mid-2017, will see the the next-generation of Volvo’s Sensus infotainment platform be built on top of Android, co-developed by the companies and shared with Polestar too. Back in 2017, the goal was to build something that was instantly familiar to existing owners of Volvo cars with Sensus. Since then, however, the UX has evolved. By 2018, the deal was to bake the Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play store access into next-gen Sensus, paving the way for thousands of other car-centric apps that could tap into the vehicle’s embedded 4G LTE connection.
